Trinity College London CertTESOL

Trinity College London CertTESOL

We have trained teachers aged from 18 to 71 years old, with many different motivations for doing the course, including people wanting a change of career, students taking a gap year after A levels, mothers returning to work, and those seeking a new challenge in their retirement.

We successfully moved our face-to-face delivery to online delivery at the start of the pandemic, and our online courses have proved very popular as they are a convenient option of attending in the comfort of your own home.

The reality is, teaching skills are teaching skills, and as a teacher you need the skills whether physically in a classroom or in a virtual classroom, in a 1-2-1 lesson or a group lesson, in a general English lesson or a business English lesson – the key is adapting your teaching skills to whichever environment you are in. we cover all these areas on the course.

We have  developed very effective live sessions and materials to create a course that has been highly praised by our trainees, both with their surprise at the amount covered on the course and the incredible support from the trainers  – both always far exceed the expectations of the trainees.

The online course has the same content and leads to the Trinity CertTESOL as on a face-to-face course, plus you acquire the additional and valuable skill of experience of online teaching, which is now much more present in our teaching world.

**We are not currently offer face-to-face and blended courses. However, the Online course is proving to be a great success, so you can still qualify.

‘Delivered online’ is not the same as a typical ‘online course’. We have many interactive ‘live’ sessions with the trainers – not recorded so you can do in your own time – so the course is NOT suitable for trainees living in countries with a big time difference to the UK .

Course Outline

We focus very much on the practical aspects of current teaching techniques and methodologies, and on delivering stimulating training courses that help trainees develop quickly into confident and competent EFL teachers. We will also look at the implications in both face-to-face and online environments.

REMEMBER: The online course leads to exactly the same Trinity CertTESOL certificate as our face-to-face courses.

  • The total qualification time is 200 hours: 130 timetabled hours and 70 non-timetabled hours.
  • Full-time and part-time courses.

In addition to preparing our trainees for entry into the profession of teaching English as a foreign language, we equip trainees with the necessary skills to pursue the wide choice of career opportunities open to qualified EFL teachers, so on the course, you will cover:

  • Teaching Adults
  • Teaching Teenagers
  • Teaching Young Learners
  • Teaching Business English
  • Teaching On-Line

  • Teaching TESOL

Part-time course

  • Course length 12-15 weeks
  • We start with 2 full days (on Saturday and Sunday 09:30 – 17:30). We believe it is very important to really kick-start the part-time course and get things rolling.
  • After this, trainees attend training sessions on:
    • Tuesday evenings every week (18:00 – 21:30)
    • plus two or three Saturdays per course (09:30 – 17:30), usually the second Saturday of the course and the first Saturday back after the holiday break.
    • Depending on the number of trainees on the course and how holidays fall, we have have occasional  evening sessions on another day, but we consult with the group about the best dates for all.
  • Trainees also have 5 sessions of teaching practice per course (total 6 hours) – usually on Saturday mornings
  • In addition, you will need time to write assignments, plan lessons, etc., so there will be evening and/or weekend tasks to complete (approx. 70 hours per course.)

Course Content

Whether you choose the Full-time or Part-time course, the face-to-face or online course, the core course content remains the same, based on six key components:

Observation of Classes

Observing other teachers teaching a class is one of the most productive ways to learn and pick up useful tips to improve your own teaching.

During the course trainees observe classes delivered by experienced teachers. These will be a mixture of live lessons of a teacher teaching a class and recorded lessons.

The trainers will guide you through these lessons, highlighting important points about the classes

Language Awareness

On the course the trainers will help you to understand a wide range of grammar topics and show you how to apply this knowledge in order to help foreign learners understand it. Focus is on practical application.

You will also learn about the sounds, intonations, sentence and word stress in English, some of the phonological difficulties experienced by different language groups and how to integrate pronunciation into you lessons.

Teaching Practice

Although you can learn a lot about language teaching by discussing the theory, methodology and techniques of teaching, it is above all a practical skill and ours is a practical course.

Teaching practice is a key part of the course as it is where you can really try to put into practice what you are learning, get valuable feedback and help with your development – the trainers are always available to support you plan – and experiment with the different teaching methods.

Unknown Language Journal

You will have lessons in a language that is not widely known (e.g. Russian or Turkish or Catalan). The aim is to give you experience of learning an unknown language as a complete beginner. The lessons will be using methods we cover on the course so you can assess our language teaching techniques from a foreign student’s point of view – you will be the student! You will be also able to see how you can teach complete beginners without translating.

Learner Profile

You will gather information about your Profile Student’s reading, listening, writing and speaking skills, which you can then analyse. You record an interview with a foreign student so you can examine the linguistic achievements and difficulties of an individual learner in depth .

Based on your analysis, you will devise a programme of lessons to help your student with selected language areas.

Materials Assignment

Towards the end of your CertTESOL course you will be asked to select a piece of material that you will have used in your teaching practice. This piece of material is one which worked well in the classroom. You will need to evaluate its strengths and effectiveness.

This is then presented to the Trinity Moderator at the end of the course.
